Earlier professional career
Paul traded fixed-income and equity derivatives at MHL/Chemical Bank and then at Merrill Lynch, where he became a Managing Director. He subsequently held senior roles in global trading and financial risk management, financial technology and asset management.
In 2005 Paul moved into asset–liability management (ALM) and asset management, initially at Pearl Assurance (now Phoenix Group). From 2012–2016 he was Chief Investment Officer at Guardian Assurance, overseeing £17 billion of assets.
